A very creative and enjoyable work, The Beatitudes is a set of eight miniatures for flute (or oboe) and organ. Stephen McManus of County Down, Northern Ireland, has taken each of the Beatitudes found in Matthew's Gospel as inspiration for a short meditation. Each miniature, two to four score pages in length, is written in a different musical style. "The Beatitudes" is fresh, new instrumental music with a definite liturgical connection. It is ideal for All Saints Day, when Matthew's account of the Beatitudes forms the Gospel reading. Usable as a group for a long prelude or as part of a religious concert, each Beatitude may also be played separately, providing appropriate music for Offertories and Communions during the year.
