The title of the piece reflects its inspiration: the Lantern Tower of Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King (1966-67). The tower's sixteen sides contain panels of stained glass, designed by John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens. Their effect is to bathe the cathedral in radiant colour, with three plain panels projecting shafts of brilliant white light through the multi-coloured spectrum. The Lantern Tower (Chorales II) aims to illustrate the intermingling light patterns in a series of chorale-like variations, which, like the tower itself, eventually comes full circle.
