This means each of the wind instruments can take on the role of playing the melody (soprano), or the supporting alto or tenor voices in a SATB style arrangement, depending on the needs of the ensemble. The soprano voice for tenor saxophone can also be played on Bb trumpet, putting the melody in a suitable higher octave than the supporting alto and tenor voices.
