After an introduction, the clarinets and violins begin the smooth, animated melody, while the flutes, violas and saxophones harmonize with a counter melody, as the lower winds and strings fill in below with less movement to support what is going on above. Bass is provided by the bass guitar, in addition to piano, in this recording. The piano and drums are playing a mild bossa nova rhythm. After the melody has gone on about 15 measures the lower winds and strings take over with a contrasting melody to answer the original melody. If feels like a key change here, but there is no key change. At the conclusion of this second melody theme, the higher winds and strings regain the lead and the previous exchange is revisited until things settle down with a layering of tones to bring the piece to a conclusion.
