It is a pastorale héroïque, a form of the opéra-ballet genre of French Baroque opera that draws subject material from pastoral poetry. Zaïs tells the story of the genie Zaïs, who disguises himself as a shepherd to win the love of Zélide, a shepherdess. After proving he is willing to give up his magic powers for his love, Oromases, the king of genies, grants the couple immortality so that they might marry.
