Hereafter, the main theme returns, slower than in the beginning, and ends in a melancholic atmosphere. In this composition, the soloist is able to show every aspect of the flugelhorn, one of the favorite instruments of the composer. Ballad is een schitterende ballade voor flugelhorn en band, geschreven in een luchtige jazzstijl. Na de voorstelling van de twee thema's, volgt er een improvisatorische passage die de solist toelaat de flugelhorn helemaal tot zijnrecht te laten komen.
