Donna Lee by legendary jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker falls in to the category of a contrafact, or the recycling of an older tune using a new melody with the same chord changes. In this case, Parker used an old tune from 1917 called "Indiana", or "Back Home Again in Indiana", improvised a new melody over it, and the rest is history. This medium-up tempo swing arrangement features flute quartet (Four C Flutes) and rhythm section, and uses a paraphrase of the original tune in combination with Parker’s melody in the head and a canon with the same melody in the head out. All instruments get the opportunity to solo, and there is a flute soli section after blowing that pays homage to another contrafact done on the same tune by Horace Silver.
